India gears up for the electric vehicle revolution!
Sales of all-electric vehicles
Sales of all-electric vehicles in India are expected to be about 10 million units this year, which is about the same as what was sold in the last 15 years, the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles said on Thursday. This is mostly due to the popularity of electric two-wheelers.
Sales of electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) in the country rose more than two-fold in 2021 to 2,33,971 units, SMEV said in a statement. That’s a lot more than the 1,00,736 units sold in 2020.
In the whole process of going electric, we haven’t had better days. One million e2ws, e-three-wheelers and cars, and buses have been sold over the last 15 years. SMEV Director General Sohinder Gill said that in just one year beginning in January 2022, they will most likely sell the same number of cars and buses, which is 1 million.
FAME II
FAME II has made a lot of positive changes to the electric car policy in the last few years. The government wants to make sure that the transportation sector is cleaner and greener by cutting down on the use of expensive and dirty liquid fuel, he said.
Some people are switching from petrol two-wheelers to electric two-wheelers because they’re cheaper to buy and run, and they also have fewer maintenance costs. Gill said that a lot of people also think about the environment and sustainability when they buy an electric two-wheeler. He said that based on the recent monthly trends, the next 12 months could see five to six times as much growth as the last 12 months did.
In 2021, there are 1,42,829 high-speed electric two-wheelers (E2Ws), which have a speed of more than 25 km/h and need a full license. In 2020, there were 27,206 E2Ws.
It only increased by 24% last year to 91,142 low-speed E2Ws with a speed of less than 25 km/h and no need for a license or registration. That’s less than half of what it was in 2020.
When it comes to sales of low-speed E2Ws, SMEV said that they fell in the last two quarters of 2021. In fact, their market share dropped to less than 15% in the last quarter of October-December 2021, compared to 75% for the whole year. It doesn’t pay for these low-speed E2Ws to be used in FAME 2.
As a result, the entry-level high-speed eE2Ws are cheaper than many low-speed bikes, the company said.
Gill said that in the next two to three years, India should have electric scooters, electric motorcycles, and electric bicycles from big and well-known companies.
In 4-5 years
”In four to five years, we can now confidently predict that around 30 percent of the two-wheeler market will be electric,” he added.
SMEV says that base on data from VAHAN, Hero Electric is the number one high-speed E2W player by sales in 2021, with 46,214 units sold. Okinawa came in second with 29,868 units, Ampere came in third with 12,417 units, and Pure EV came in fourth with 10,946 units.
